12 May 2007: No Falcons Please, We're Maltese

A picture

St. John's Co-Cathedral

From the air, Malta was a city of yellow sandstone lego. From the ground, it still looked like a city of yellow sandstone lego, albeit one authored by the children of Maltese giants.

Virtually all of the hotels are located in Sliema, a vast holiday resort, rather than the capital Valletta which, due to its diminutive dimensions, has few hotels. Most of the Sliema hotels are in the St. Julian's area, but there are some more convenient ones located along the coast that faces Valletta such as ours, the Bayview.

After arriving at hotel reception, we were then whisked away to our room. Which was three streets away in a different building. Is there a Trade Descriptions act in Malta? Although we don't ask for much in a hotel, we were disappointed. This was not due to its orphaned location. The single receptionist was under constant assault from several different (already impatient) customers, the hot water tanks would ran out halfway through a shower and there was no hotel information available in the room. Just letting you know.

The shot above is taken from the beautiful and dense St. John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta. Hours can easily be spent exploring its full detail. Marble tombstones on the floor; sculptures in the chapels; paintings on the vaulted ceiling; work by Caravaggio. What more could you ask for?
